Book Version vs. Movie Version

Are you the type of person who reads the book then watches the movie?  Or do you watch the movie then get inspired to read the book?  Or if you see the movie version does it spoil the book for you?  When possible, I generally try to read the book then watch the movie version.  But there have been times when watching a movie version has inspired me to go and read the book, especially if it is part of a series (then I can learn what happens sooner).
I start with the book because it delves deeper into the motivations of the characters and any back story that might be helpful.  I found reading the book The Hunger Games before seeing the movie version was very beneficial because there was so much the movie glossed over.  There wasn't time to go deeper into the significance of certain objects or gestures that the book could easily go into.

Seeing the movie after reading the book does have its downfalls though.  There have been times when the movie doesn't hold true to the book and it really distracts me from enjoying the movie.  When they differ greatly I try to think of them as separate entities.  Sometimes that works, but sometimes it just doesn't.  One of the those such occurrences is with the Bourne series by Robert Ludlum that was made into movies.  Ludlum was just a descriptive genius with how he wrote Jason Bourne.  Everything was thought out to the smallest detail and the book progresses over a long period of time.  After seeing the first movie The Bourne Identity I just really couldn't get over how different it was from the book and how much better the book was from the movie.
I would say me disliking a movie because it differs greatly from the book is rare.  I enjoy both and get to see how other people view the characters that I have held in my mind while reading.  Sometimes I can't imagine how the actor or actress will do justice to a character--sometimes they succeed and sometimes they don't.  I find the fun part is just trying both and exploring all different facets of the story.  Especially if it is a story that you just don't want to put down.

Let me know what you prefer....

Keep on reading and watching!
